Between Portland, OR and Seattle WA is one of the most famous volcanos in the USA, Mount St Helens. Mt. St Helens is located in the Cascade Mountains and is a segment of the Pacific Ring of Fire that includes over 160 active volcanoes. It is most remembered for it catastrophic explosion on May 18, 1980 – described as the deadliest (57 lives lost) and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States. It also resulted in the largest debris avalanche on earth in recorded history. The ash cloud spread across the US in 3 days and circled the earth in 15 days. The eruption literally took off the mountains peak, replacing it with a mile wide crater.
